Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Pelvic inflammatory disease, commonly referred to as PID, refers to infection in the uterus, fallopian tubes (tubes that carry eggs from the ovaries to the uterus) and other nearby associated reproductive organs.
Symptoms commonly are lower abdominal pain and inflammation.
The causes typically is acquired infections from sexual activity, abortion procedures and childbirth.
Pelvic inflammatory disease can damage the fallopian tubes, uterus and ovarian tissue and cause infertility.
In addition to infertility pelvic inflammatory disease can lead to ectopic pregnancy (occurring in a fallopian tube or elsewhere outside the uterus), abscesses and chronic pelvic pain syndrome CPPS.
